Worksite Wellness

Healthy Eating in the Workplace

Americans now eat two thirds of their meals outside of the home; many of those meals are consumed during the workday. Quick and convenient options—from vending machines, fast food restaurants, and corner stores—aren’t always healthy options. Eating nutritiously not only improves employee wellness by helping to maintain a healthy weight, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, and preventing many chronic diseases, it also helps increase energy and morale. Communities Promoting Health supports workplaces in providing employees with healthy options at the workplace, at meetings, and in educating workers on finding and choosing healthy options when eating both on- and off-site.

Some of the healthy eating initiatives supported by Communities Promoting Health include:

  • Create a Healthy Food Policy
  • Establish a fruit and vegetable honor system/ basket
  • Compile a list or create a (walk-friendly!) map of local healthy food vendors for meals, breaks, and catering
  • Offer healthy vending machine options in your workplace
  • Support Weight Watchers or another healthy weight loss program at work
  • Provide tips on packing a healthy lunch and healthy snacks
